Guns In America Presentation

TOO MUCH VIOLENCE

I really appreciated the fact that CJ had included a personal and emotional piece of her life to help project the fact that gun violence is extremely real and affects a great amount of people. Hearing that the US has the most school shootings by far was very saddening, frustrating, and scary because of the fact that many innocent lives are being lost to this issue. This issue has been going on for way too long and there appears to be nothing grand or big enough that has been done to put an end to the gun violence the US is suffering from.

I agreed with this group when they had discussed just how long this issue has been going on, such as one of the articles they had included for their 'group links' having been published by The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, which has been around since the 1970's. It is now 2022. This group presentation had also taken a deeper dive into the statistics on different types of gun violence, the individuals who are getting hurt or killed by gun violence, and the age range of injuries and deaths. This specific piece of information was very hurtful to read because of the fact that these statistics and numbers increase every single day and is illustrated in an extremely specific way.

Hearing how America is the most obsessed with guns and the media/films continue to get more and more violent since the 1950's was disappointing. In my opinion, I feel America has this idea that they need to be the most powerful people and that obtaining guns is the way to fulfill this. We need to share and project that this is not at all true and the negative and disturbing consequences from gun violence should be a great reason to end this issue.

  1. Thank you for your comment, I was nervous to share but we ended up having a thought provoking discussion that I'm still pondering about. I agree with your last point, power and fear are two deeply ingrained feelings in American culture. Those in power keep such historic beliefs around, like the 2nd Amendment, and construe them into such skewed values. We should not value our "freedom" to own guns over people's lives, like the innocent lives of all those lost in mass shootings. Guns are a tool used to maintain security, what can we provide to someone that thinks they need a gun to change their mind? How can we change the violent values of American society? Those are just some things I've still been thinking about since our discussion, great post!
