Key Facts About Americans and Guns
AMERICANS & GUNS
After reading the article, "Key Facts About Americans and Guns", I learned that there is about 30% of adults who personally own a gun or live in a household with a gun. The main reason for this is for personal protection. I do not find this hard to believe because I personally have talked to my peers and friends about whether or not they would want a gun in the house and the first thing they say is that they would own a gun if they feel they needed personal protection. I found it interesting when I read that 48% of Americans see gun violence as a huge problem in the country today because I feel there would have been way more people believing this and wanting to change this issue. Reading this statistic was honestly kind of disappointing and saddening because of the amount of horrible causes and innocent lives that have been lost due to gun violence. When I saw that race, ethnicity, and party and community type had to do with individuals thoughts on gun violence I was not surprised at all. I say this because 82% of Black adults believe gun violence is a huge problem and only 39% of White adults view gun violence this way.
According to the article, "Guns and Race: The Different Worlds of Black and White Americans", between 2011 and 2013, the difference between the amount of deaths of Black men and White men is extremely high. This article includes a chart that shows the gun deaths per 100,000 and Black men are right under 35, while White men are a little above 15. I feel this feeds into the statistic of why 82% of Black adults view gun violence as an issue and 39% of White adults agree with this.
A question that I have for you is, when do you think there is going to be something done to fix this issue and to reduce the amount of lives lost from gun violence?
